こんにちは。私の名前はマイルズ・ウェイレンです。アメリカ合衆国出身です。現在、私のこれまでの世界の捉え方やコミュニケーションのあり方、人を理解する姿勢を見つめ直すため、日本で時間を過ごしています。ニューイングランドで育った私は、幼い頃から「快適さ」は時に自分を制限するものだと学びました。安定した環境ではありましたが、旅に出たり、新しい人々と会話を交わしたり、素早い適応を求められる状況に身を置いたりすることで、慣れ親しんだ枠を越えたときにこそ、自分が最も生き生きとしていると感じてきました。

私は昔から強い好奇心に突き動かされてきました。沈黙を埋めるためではなく、動機や視点、そして意思決定の背景にある考えを理解するために質問することを意識してきました。金融や不動産の分野での経験を通じて、成功は技術的なスキルだけで得られるものではなく、人のインセンティブ、不安、価値観を理解することが不可欠だと学びました。その信念こそが、日常生活において「聴くこと」「観察すること」「意図」が重視される文化を体感するため、私を日本へと導いた理由です。

物事への本当の理解は、能動的な傾聴から始まると私は考えています。それは返答するために聴くのではなく、受け止めるために聴くことです。見知らぬ人との会話や、前提を揺さぶられる短い言葉のやり取り、あるいは言葉以上の意味を持つ沈黙の共有といった、予期せぬ瞬間にこそ、最も深い気づきがあると思います。異なる背景、年齢、信念を持つ人々と関わることで、視野は自然と広がり、反対にこれが欠けると、自分の価値観が支配的になり、偏りが静かに育つ狭い思考に陥りがちです。より大きな視点で見れば、傾聴の欠如は、社会における分断や誤解、停滞した思考を生み出してしまうと思っています。

だからこそ私は、「アート・シンキング」という考え方に強く共感しています。創造性や未来志向の問題解決は、理論だけから生まれるものではなく、経験から生まれます。理解していない人のためにデザインすることはできません。共感なしにリードすることもできません。実際にフィールドに立たずにフットボールの困難を完全に理解できないのと同じように、現実の世界に身を浸さずして意味のある変化を思い描くことはできません。経験は判断力を磨き、物事に触れることは視点を育てると信じています。

私は人を「つながりの建築家」だと捉えています。アイデアは設計図であり、経験は材料です。踏み込む環境が多いほど、構造は強く、しなやかになります。リーダーシップ、ビジネス、創造的な仕事において、広く生きてきた人ほど、実際に長く機能する解決策を築く力を備えていると思います。

私は「ブリッジ・ビルダー（橋を架ける人）」という役割に共鳴しています。橋は、離れた二つの側をつなぎます。そこには、バランス、忍耐、そして構造への信頼が必要です。橋は一瞬で完成するものではなく、計画、調整、協力を要します。しかし、一度完成すれば、移動や交流、成長を可能にすることでしょう。私は、違いを越えて人々を結びつけ、アイデアが自由に行き交い、協働が自然に生まれる場をつくる存在でありたいと考えています。

安全で予測可能な道に留まるのではなく、私は「動く」ことを選びたいです。成長はめったに快適ではなく、前進には失敗が伴うこともあります。それでも、完璧さよりも勢いのほうが重要だと信じています。確実さの中で立ち止まるより、不完全でも前に進みたい。未知の環境に踏み込み、そこで出会う人々から学ぶことで、私は世界の見方だけでなく、世界への貢献の仕方そのものを、これからも形づくっていきたいと思います。

Hello, my name is Myles Whalen, and I am from the United States. I am currently spending time in Japan to challenge how I see the world, how I communicate, and how I understand people. Growing up in New England, I learned early that comfort can be limiting. While the environment was stable, I felt most alive when I pushed beyond what was familiar, whether through travel, conversations with new people, or placing myself in situations where I had to adapt quickly.

I have always been driven by curiosity. I like asking questions, not to fill silence, but to understand motivations, perspectives, and the reasoning behind decisions. Through my experiences in finance and real estate, I’ve learned that success rarely comes from technical skill alone. It comes from understanding people’s incentives, fears, and values. That belief is what ultimately brought me to Japan, to experience a culture where listening, observation, and intention shape everyday life.

I believe real understanding starts with active listening. Not listening to respond, but listening to absorb. Some of the most meaningful moments happen unexpectedly during a conversation with a stranger, a brief exchange that challenges an assumption, or a moment of shared silence that says more than words. When you engage with people across different backgrounds, ages, and beliefs, your perspective naturally expands. Without this, it becomes easy to fall into narrow thinking, where your own values dominate and bias quietly grows. On a larger scale, this lack of listening fuels division, miscommunication, and stagnant thinking in society.

This is why I strongly connect with the idea of art thinking. Creativity and future-oriented problem solving do not come from theory alone, they come from experience. You cannot design for people you don’t understand. You cannot lead without empathy. Just as you can’t fully grasp the challenges of football without ever stepping onto the field, you cannot envision meaningful change without immersing yourself in the world as it actually exists. Experience sharpens judgment. Exposure builds perspective.

I see people as architects of connection. Ideas are the blueprint, but experiences are the materials. The more environments you step into, the stronger and more adaptable your structures become. In leadership, business, and creative work, those who have lived widely are better equipped to build solutions that actually last.

I resonate with the role of a “Bridge Builder.” A bridge connects two sides that would otherwise remain separate. It requires balance, patience, and trust in structure. Building a bridge isn’t instant, it takes planning, adjustment, and cooperation. But once built, it allows movement, exchange, and growth. I strive to be someone who brings people together across differences, creating spaces where ideas flow freely and collaboration feels natural.

Rather than remaining in a safe and predictable lane, I choose motion. Growth is rarely comfortable, and progress often involves missteps. Still, I believe momentum matters more than perfection. I would rather move forward imperfectly than remain still in certainty. By stepping into unfamiliar environments and learning from the people within them, I continue shaping not only how I see the world, but how I contribute to it.
