こんにちは！バレット・アッカーと申します。この夏、ブルドーザーでインターンをしています。出身はサンフランシスコですが、母とその家族を通じて日本にもルーツがあります。このバックグラウンドのおかげで、異なる文化や視点の間を行き来する価値を理解できるようになりました。それは私の働き方や問題解決のアプローチにも通じています。ただし、常に自分の「土台」や「北極星」を忘れず、それを道しるべとして目標に向かうことが大切だと考えています。
幼い頃から、ピアノやサッカーを通じて創造性を表現することが好きでした。ピアノで即興演奏をしたり、サッカーで新しいボールの動かし方を試したりする中で、常に型にはまらない方法で問題を解決してきました。それに気づかせてくれたのが「アート思考」でした。サッカーでは、ゴールに向かう前にボールを後ろにパスすることもよくあります。それは、未来の目標と今日をつなぐために、自分の「原点」や「なぜ」に立ち返ることの大切さを教えてくれます。自分の北極星を思い出し、自分自身のコンパスを信じ、可能性に対して好奇心を持ち、未知の中でも心地よさを感じることが重要です。
私は常に国際ビジネスに興味を持っており、特に文化やコミュニケーション、期待値の違いを乗り越えるチャレンジに魅力を感じています。不確実性は創造的な自由をもたらします。私は、さまざまな環境を比較し、利用可能なリソースを活かして他者が協力やつながりを見出せるような計画を立てることが好きです。世界のビジネス文化が対立するのではなく、互いに学び合い、高め合えることを願っています。ブルドーザーにはニヶ月間という短い期間しかいませんが、日本の日常的な働き方を体験できることをとても楽しみにしています。そして、日本のビジネスに新しい視点を提供すると同時に、アメリカにも何か価値あるものを持ち帰れたらと思っています。
アート思考を通じて大切なのは、過去と未来をつなぐ解決策は、新しいことに挑戦し、変化を受け入れる勇気と自信があるときに初めて見つかるということです。ピアニストが筋肉の記憶に頼るように、また航海士が潮の流れや星を読みながら航路を見出すように、アート思考は「完璧」を手放し、好奇心を道しるべにしても良いのだと教えてくれます。

Using Your North Star
Hello! My name is Barrett Acker, and I am interning at Bulldozer this summer. I’m originally from San Francisco, but I also have roots in Japan through my mom and her family. My background has helped me appreciate the value of navigating between different cultures and perspectives, which I can draw parallels with my approach to work and problem-solving. It is important, however, to always remember your foundations, your north star, and let that guide you as you reach your goals.
Since I was young, I’ve enjoyed expressing creativity through playing piano and soccer. Whether I’m improvising a melody on the piano or experimenting with new ways to move with the ball, I am constantly solving problems in ways that don’t align with typical art, which Art Thinking has helped me to realize. In soccer, you often must pass the ball backwards before you move ahead to score. That is why it is important to remember our origins and our “why” so that we can connect our future goals with today. Remember your north star, trust your inner compass, be curious about what’s possible, and stay comfortable in the unknown.
I’ve always been very interested in international business, especially the challenge of navigating differences in culture, communication, and expectations. Uncertainty brings creative freedom. I enjoy comparing different landscapes and using my available resources to lay out detailed plans to help others see where connections and collaboration are possible. I hope that global business cultures can both learn from and improve each other rather than conflict. Although I will only be with Bulldozer for 2 months, I am very excited to experience Japanese daily work, in hopes that I can provide a different perspective to business here and that I can also bring something valuable back to the US.
It is important to remember that through Art Thinking, finding solutions to connect our past and future are only found when we are willing and confident enough to try something new and accept change. Just like when a pianist relies on muscle memory, or when a sailor reads the tides and stars to navigate his way through the ocean, Art Thinking shows that it is okay to let go of perfection and allow curiosity to lead.
