こんにちは。アメリカから来ましたミシェル・チョイと申します。現在、Bulldozerで2か月間のインターンシップに参加しています。私はこれまで、静かな郊外で育ってきましたが、その中でも世界を広げる方法を自ら工夫してきました。新しいハイキングコースを探したり、毎日さまざまな人と会話してみたりと、日々の中に冒険の要素を見出してきました。
もともと人に質問をすることが好きで、高齢者や子どもたちと関わる地域ボランティアに参加する中で、「人を理解し、話を聞くこと」への関心がより深まっていきました。その思いをもとに、日本の文化、環境、人々と触れ合いながら、自分自身の視野を広げ、他の人の持つユニークな才能から学びたいという気持ちで来日しました。
他者を理解するために最も重要なのは、「本当に耳を傾けること」だと感じています。ただ表面的に聞くのではなく、相手の言葉一つひとつを受け止め、咀嚼する姿勢が求められます。こうした出会いは、街中で偶然出会った知らない人との会話のように、予期せぬ形で訪れることもあります。しかし、年齢、信念、バックグラウンドが異なる人々と積極的に対話することで、視点の多様性が生まれます。
より良いコミュニケーション、伝わるプレゼンテーション、そして深いつながりは、相手の動機や本質を理解することから始まります。逆に、他人の声に耳を貸さず、自分の価値観だけに閉じこもってしまうと、視野が狭まり、一方的な主張に偏りがちです。このような傾向は、日常の小さな言い争いから、社会問題や政治的分断といった大きな課題にまでつながっていると感じています。
アート思考がもたらす創造性や未来志向の力は、こうした「自分の枠」を越え、世界や人々、そして自分自身のユニークさを体験するところから育まれます。たとえば、実際にハイキングをしたことがなければ、そこで起こり得る困難を理解し、必要なプロダクトを生み出すことは難しいでしょう。世界を経験せずに、未来を想像して変革を起こすことはできません。リーダーが社員の思いを理解しなければ、より良い働き方や職場環境を思い描くこともできません。
自分自身は「筆」であり、経験は「絵の具」です。多様な経験を通じて初めて、世界に変化をもたらす一枚の絵を描くことができるのだと信じています。
私が「Campfire Starter（キャンプファイヤースターター）」という表現を選んだのは、焚き火が持つ対話のあたたかさを大切にしたいと考えたからです。焚き火は、森や海辺、山など、毎回異なる場所で行われます。それは、新しい環境に踏み出す積極性や、冒険心、そして柔軟な姿勢を象徴していると感じます。
もちろん、火を灯すのは簡単ではありません。木が湿っていたり、風が強かったりと、うまくいかないこともあります。そんなときでも、焚き火を囲む人々が協力し合い、薪を集めるなどして準備を進めることが必要です。困難を乗り越えて火が灯ったとき、その光とぬくもりは暗闇に安心感を与え、人々の心をほぐし、自然と会話が生まれる空間をつくります。
このように、キャンプファイヤースターターは、人と人とのつながりを生み出し、心の通うコミュニティを築く存在です。特に、知らない人や未知の世界に対して関心を持ち、自分の殻を破って一歩踏み出すことが、私の成長の原動力になっています。そしてその過程の中で、自然とコミュニケーション力やプレゼンテーション力も磨かれていくのだと実感しています。
安全で安定した現状にとどまるのではなく、新しい未来に向かって勇気を持って進むこと。それこそが、前進の原動力になると信じています。私は、立ち止まるよりも、つまずきながらでも前へ進みたいのです。
Hello! My name is Michelle Choy and I am from America, interning at Bulldozer for two months. Growing up in the quiet suburbs for all my life, I always created ways to explore the world, from finding different hiking spots to talking to new people every day. I have always loved asking questions and volunteering in my community with seniors and youth, fostering the start of a deep passion for understanding and listening to people. Building on this interest, I came to Japan to experience the culture, environment, and people to widen my own perspective and learn from the unique talents of others.
The key to understanding others is to listen, and I mean to truly listen and digest every word. Sometimes, these kinds of meetings can be unexpected or through coincidence, like meeting a stranger on the street. However, diversifying one’s perspective starts with being proactive to talk to new people, no matter the differences in age, beliefs, or backgrounds. The core of greater communication, more effective presentations, and deeper connections consists of understanding the motivations and nature of others. Those who fail to listen to others become stuck in a box, trapped in their own beliefs and prone to one-sided arguments. This problem manifests throughout society, from as small as petty arguments to as large as social issues and political divides, leading to great relevancy and urgency.
The creativity and future mindset of art thinking stems from stepping outside of this confined box and experiencing the uniqueness of the world, the people around you, and yourself. I can’t create a hiking product, if I’ve never been hiking to understand the possible struggles on a hike. A person cannot imagine change to the world, if they have not experienced the world. A business cannot visualize better employee satisfaction as a business leader, if it does not understand its employees. You are the brush, but these experiences are your paints, and that is how you can paint a picture to envision change to impact the world.
The reason I “Campfire Starter” is due to the conversational warmth of campfires. Campfires are set up in forests, beaches, mountains: a new place every single time. This chose proactiveness and the desire for adventure and open-mindedness. and a happy mood for good conversations with others. In this way, a campfire starter understands and connects people together, building community. Learning about others and the world around me, especially strangers and the unknown, is what motivates me outside of my comfort zone, improving my communication and presentation skills naturally in the process. Embracing a new future, instead of settling for the safety and mediocrity of the present, is what drives progress. I’d rather stumble forward than stay still.
