似ているようで違う文化

今日は、私たちがBulldozerでのインターンシップの最終日です。このインターンシップでは、異なる文化の中で働くという貴重な機会を得ることができました。ここ数ヶ月は、仕事の面でも私生活の面でも、学びや観察、そして日常の中にある驚きに満ちていました。

インターンシップ期間中、私たちはグラフィックデザイン、イベント制作、マーケティング、さらにはさまざまなプロジェクトに関わる実務的な手配など、幅広い業務に携わることができました。オープンで柔軟な雰囲気のある小さな会社で働くことは、とても新鮮で、大規模な組織とはまた違った魅力がありました。小さなチームの中で、さまざまな役割を試すことができ、自分たちの仕事内容に影響を与えることもできました。毎日が異なっていて、退屈な日は一日もありませんでした。

このインターンシップで特にやりがいを感じたのは、日本の職場文化を内側から体験し、それをフィンランドの日常生活と比較して考えることができたことです。多くのことに驚かされました。たとえば、一般的に「無口」と思われがちなフィンランド人ですが、特にクリエイティブな分野では、アイデアを一緒に声に出して話すことが多く、意外とおしゃべりだという発見がありました。一方で、両国ともに沈黙を自然なコミュニケーションの一部と捉えており、すべての間を言葉で埋める必要はありません。その意味で、言葉と沈黙の両方を大切にするという点で、両文化は共通点を持っていると感じました。

日々の仕事のルーティンも、さまざまな点で異なっていました。通常、私たちの勤務は朝10時に始まり、夕方まで続きました。これは、朝早く始まるフィンランドのリズムとは対照的でした。また、主に英語での業務だったため、コミュニケーションにおいてはチャレンジもありましたが、新しい発見も多くありました。フィンランドでは、率直で明確な表現が重視される一方で、日本では控えめで間接的な表現が一般的です。そのため、私たちには新たな感受性と注意深さが求められました。仕事のペースや量も異なっており、日本では長時間労働や残業が一般的ですが、フィンランドでは仕事と生活のバランスが大切にされています。

違いがある一方で、多くの共通点も見つけることができました。両文化ともに正確さ、時間厳守、そして体系的な進め方を重視しています。フィンランド人も日本人も、仕事に対して真剣に取り組み、お互いのパーソナルスペースを尊重する姿勢があります（それは身体的にも精神的にも言えます）。また、自然や四季を大切にする心も共通しており、それぞれの形で表現されています。どちらの文化にも、周囲の環境や世界のリズムに対する静かな気づきがあるように感じました。

この国際インターンシップの機会に恵まれ、日常生活を新たな視点から見つめ直すことができたことに、心から感謝しています。この経験は、私たちの個人としての成長だけでなく、ビジネスマンとしての成長にも深く関わるものです。キャリアの面だけでなく、文化的にも、そして個人的にも今後の人生の歩みに大きな影響を与えてくれるはずです。

Same same but different

This is our last day of internship at Bulldozer, marking the end of an internship that gave us a unique opportunity to work in a different culture. The past few months have been full of learning, observing, and finding wonder in everyday life – both at work and beyond it.

During the internship, we had the chance to take part in a wide range of tasks, including graphic design, event production and marketing, as well as various practical arrangements for different projects. It was refreshing to work in a small company where the atmosphere was open and flexible – quite different, we imagine, from large organizations. In a small team, we were able to try out many roles and to influence our own work tasks. No two days were the same and there were no boring days.

One of the most rewarding aspects of the internship was the chance to experience Japanese work culture from the inside and reflect on how it compares to daily life in Finland. Many things surprised us. For example, Finns, who are often considered quiet, turned out to be quite talkative – at least in the creative field, where ideas are often discussed out loud together. On the other hand, in both cultures, silence is a natural part of interaction and there’s no need to fill every pause with words. In that sense, these two cultures meet in their shared appreciation for both words and silence.

Daily work routines were different in many ways. Our days typically started at 10 a.m. and finished in the evening, which was different from the Finnish rhythm, where the day often starts early. We worked primarily in English, which brought its own challenges and opportunities – especially considering how different our communication styles are. In Finland, direct and clear expression is highly valued, while in Japan, messages tend to be more subtle and indirect. This called for a new kind of sensitivity and attentiveness. The pace and workload also differed: in Japan, long hours and overtime are common, whereas in Finland, there’s a strong emphasis on maintaining a work–life balance.

Despite the differences, we also noticed a surprising number of similarities. Both cultures value accuracy, punctuality, and systematically. Finnish and Japanese people alike are used to taking their work seriously and respecting each other’s personal space – both physically and mentally. Nature and the seasons are important in both cultures, though expressed in different ways. In each, there’s a quiet awareness of our surroundings and the rhythm of the world around us.

We’re grateful for the opportunity to take part in this international internship and to view everyday life from a new perspective. This experience has been a meaningful part of our personal and professional growth, and it will surely shape the steps we take in the future – not only in terms of our careers, but also culturally and personally.
